If a tree falls in the woods…
December 21, 2009 by admin.
img_0631.JPG (power lines!!! )
will there be a sound?
A classic philosophy question. Another: If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be? Or is that Psychiatry?
Ahhhh, Physics, Philosophy…and Photography! Three great things to ponder. (smile)
Things we have been pondering lately - in that order might be:
1.Physics…a natural science of matter and it’s motion through space and time. Eventually you get down to something concrete no matter how small it might be.
One of Leah’s questions in Physics was something like this - The speed limit sign on the highway, is it average speed or immediate speed? Leah was first to post a comment; it can’t be average speed, because that would mean that you could go 20 mph for a while and then speed up to 90 mph for the remainder of the hour…the average would be about 55 or 60 mph… I kid you not, THREE cops who are in her online class studying for criminal justice degrees said it was AVERAGE speed, and their reasoning? Because that’s the speed most everyone does give or take 10 mph.
Leah was right. She got good marks on that one. Hope we’re never driving in California ;) ’nuff said about that.
2. Philosophy - definition according to Wikipedia - Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning subjects such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Philosophy is an attitude to life or way or principle of living whose focus is on resolving the most basic esistential questions about the human condition. For example…What is the meaning of life? Why are we here?
Reminds me of a song! (by Becky Lester)
There are so many questions in this life, that men have tried to reason away. Like where to we come from and why are we here? And how does night turn into day? Well I’ve known the answers for quite a long time, and it’s not just something I’ve learned. I found the answers to all of life’s questions, in God’s blessed holy word -
The answer is in God’s Word; nessled in those pages there is a refuge for the soul. There is healing when your soul is dying. So if you’re searchin’ my friend, let me tell you again - the answer is in His word!
A PHYSICAL answer to a PHILOSOPHICAL problem…how much simpler can it be?
And why can’t people see it?
3. Photography is an example of a physics experiment having to do with the discovery of the speed of light. Speaking of seeing things. People have a tendency to believe things if they can see them. I think it is a tool of the devil to use the media, and so called trick photography to show people amazing things that are not real. On the other hand, a picture is worth a thousand words! And BOY hasn’t our “brave, fearless leader” been speaking a LOT lately? SO, on that note -
Let’s talk about global warming! (After all, it’s mostly hot air! smile) It’s been COLD and SNOWY here. We got about TEN INCHES of wet, heavy snow that pulled down (slang) LOTSA trees. One such tree, Beech in fact, fell from the hillside facing our house across the road into the power lines and landed in our yard. -Okay, for all you “critiquers”- it doesn’t matter what kind it was, but it sounded good at the time! :) It was 16 inches in diameter - uh, that’s around. Seems like to me, the global warming, Water World Wannabes missed it this time. And I have pictures to prove it!
I know one thing… PHYSICS and PHILOSOPHY… the LORD said that he would not destroy the world with water again. They better be a-watchin’ out for the fire.
Not a very ‘deep’ blog this time, and I do apologize. But I THINK I can upload pictures so you can see our snow and the tree that came across the road. If it doesn’t work, Chris will fix it and I’ll send out an appendix later, haha. Our electricity has been off since Saturday morning, so please have a little grace.
ohhh that picture looks too big….let’s see how it goes…here goes…SAVE ![]()

What Did You Say? December 1, 2009
December 2, 2009 by admin.
Note to self: Do not eat hot fudge cake and coffee at 8:30 PM unless you want to be writing a blog at 11:30 PM.
There could NOT have been that much caffeine in that coffee.
But all that aside, here we are again. Thanksgiving is over (though it shouldn’t ever be over) and Christmas is just around the corner. So today we took a field trip – Christmas shopping.
We saw self-help books, history books, cookbooks, Bibles and other books claiming to be Bibles. There were books for White people (ask me about that), Black people, Asian people, Hispanic people, Indian people, Arab people and Dummies.
Then there were books on sale.
As I was perusing the proverbial page-turners, I happed upon a tome I have been wanting for some years, now. Its title is Eats, Shoots and Leaves. It has a cute little Panda on it, which they tell me isn’t really a bear at all!
The book is about punctuation and how it can make a HUGE difference where you put that comma, and in what is being said – example:
A woman without her man is nothing.
A woman, without her, man is nothing.
I can’t wait to read the rest of the book. It’s wrapped up in shiny paper for me to open in a few days and say “OH! I have wanted this book for yeeeeeears! Thank you!” J
So I have to wait.
Because I have to wait, back to Algebra. We are doing word problems. Isn’t it something how what is said and what we hear can mean so many things?
Now, you tell me about this problem.
The sum of two numbers is larger than the
All I get from my teacher is- “You have to express your equation in terms of X. There is a smaller number and a larger number. No, Mom, write that here. I KNOW it says ‘sum’- that means subtract. Write that here. Yes, I know that up until now ‘sum’ meant add. No, the Algebra god did NOT change his mind – MOM!” J
Confusing.
Anyhow, that, and a couple of things that happened earlier in the week and this evening made me think about what we say, what we SHOULD say, and when we should be quiet.
I think there is a reason that the Bible says we should STUDY to be quiet. It’s not easy.
Do we sometimes confuse people with our terms? I was telling some friends yesterday that usually, unless someone asks for my specific opinion (except for this blog, of course), I don’t really say my thoughts; especially if it’s concerning their walk with Christ. It’s gotten me in to SO much trouble in the past.
I am convinced that ‘What NOT To Say’ should be a textbook for Christians, and I am SO sorry for some of the things that I have said in the past. Learning WHEN to tell someone the truth has been a hard lesson for me. I know I have hurt many people like that.
My friend said they didn’t think I would EVER do something like that. I told them that sarcasm is a sin. J
Then, I thought about how we say that someone is “windy” (matter of fact, we tell
While talking to another friend, I reminded them that it takes the Lord to change someone. When you try and turn over a new leaf, the wind blows and you turn right back over! (Thanks, Bro. Phil)
Then the Lord reminded me of how he compared the wind to the Holy Spirit in John chapter three and verses 6-8. You can’t tell where the wind is coming from, or where it has been, or where it’s going- but it’s evident that it’s there. You can’t ignore the wind; neither can you ignore the Holy Spirit when He convicts your heart.
You will either be comforted by the cooling, gentle calming current, or you will be buffeted by a boisterous blast; no mistaking when the wind from Heaven lights upon your soul you will feel it. There is no confusion, for God is not Confusion’s author! For those who have never felt anything other than tornado-force gales, Jesus gave the best advice – “Ye must be born again.”
For those of us who long for the sweet smell of the Rose of Sharon on the breeze, we understand why Jesus compared the two.
(Let’s talk about Pneuma later okay? J)
I guess my real thought is- if anybody’s ever going to say anything good, it will be the Holy Ghost. We can sing, talk, even preachers can preach – I believe God’s way to draw all men unto himself – but unless the Holy Spirit convicts folks, we are wasting our breath.
We need to have our speech alway with grace, seasoned with salt – not the other way around.
The Law of Kindness should be under our tongues- and we should tame our tongues.
WOW- that hurts too much to be confessin’ right now (at least to you J )
Maybe you or I can say a thing or two to make our friends think about looking up, but if so, we know it will have to be carried on the wind of the Spirit to turn things around for good.
Or is that, to turn things around – for good?
